Kanpur: Jewellery worth about Rs 50 lakh went missing from a locker at the SBI branch in the Swaroop Nagar area, following which the locker holder accused the bank manager and employees of negligence and approached the Police Commissioner’s office. On his orders, Swaroop Nagar police registered a case against the manager and employees on Saturday.Rashmi Arora, a resident of Kaushalpuri, said she had opened a savings account at the State Bank of Travancore branch in Swaroop Nagar in 2003. She said the bank had allotted her locker number 23, where she kept jewellery worth about Rs 50 lakh. After her husband’s death, she began living in Lucknow at her daughter’s house.She said that about four months ago, she visited the bank with her daughter and learnt that the State Bank of Travancore had merged with the State Bank of India. She said locker charges were being deducted from her account. On July 21, after depositing money in the account, the bank told her the locker number, but she could not check it that day as she did not have the key.She said that when she went to the bank on July 27 and checked the locker, the jewellery was missing.She said that despite complaining to bank employees and the police, she did not receive any satisfactory response. She then filed a complaint accusing the bank manager and employees of negligence.Tripta Kalyal, a resident of Alambagh in Lucknow, said her elderly mother had opened a savings account in 2003 at the Swaroop Nagar branch of State Bank of Travancore, where locker number 23 had also been allotted to her. She had kept jewellery worth about Rs 50 lakh in the locker. She used to visit from time to time to check the locker, but her father died in 2011. Her mother was suffering from heart disease and was therefore called to stay with her.Four months ago, she had gone to the bank with her mother, where the branch manager said that the bank had since been merged with the State Bank of India (SBI). She was told that she no longer had any locker there.Rashmi appealed to the Police Commissioner in the case. On his orders, a case was registered on Saturday against the manager and employees.Swaroop Nagar police station in-charge Devendra Singh said the locker holder had come twice in 2020 to open the locker. “There is an entry of this in the bank register. The matter is being investigated,” Singh added.
