Kanpur: Police have registered a case against the operator and staff of a prominent restaurant in Kanpur after a customer alleged that a dead cockroach was found in a serving of veg biryani ordered for his children. The incident, which was captured on video and shared on social media, prompted a police inquiry and a food safety inspection.According to police, Vivek Shukla, a resident of Emerald Garden, had gone to the restaurant in the Swaroop Nagar area with his family for dinner on June 30. He alleged that a dead cockroach was found in the veg biryani served to his children. After consuming the food, the children reportedly fell ill and started vomiting.Shukla recorded a video of the alleged contamination and posted it on social media, following which police reached the restaurant and began an inquiry.Police said that when Shukla complained to the restaurant manager, the latter allegedly refused to accept responsibility, leading to a heated argument. As the situation escalated, Swaroop Nagar police intervened. Based on the customer’s complaint, police registered a case against the restaurant operator and staff under Sections 274 and 275 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deal with food adulteration.Acting on information from the police, a team from the food safety department visited the restaurant and collected samples of the biryani. Assistant commissioner Sanjay Pratap Singh said the samples have been sent to a laboratory for testing.
