Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Tuesday reviewed the progress of the Kharicut canal development project and announced key changes to the plan, including widening the proposed roads on both sides of the canal into three-lane carriageways to improve connectivity and traffic flow in the city’s eastern areas.Mayor Hitesh Barot, standing committee chairman Kamlesh Patel, ruling party leader Jashu Thakor and senior AMC officials conducted a site inspection of the 12.7 km corridor stretching from Naroda to Vinzol. The project aims to transform the canal corridor into a modern urban roadway with improved transport infrastructure and green spaces. Under the original approved design, 9.5m-wide roads were proposed on both sides of the canal, along with 1.2m-wide green strips, six-metre-wide service roads and footpaths, subject to the available right of way.During the inspection, civic authorities decided to upgrade the proposed roads into three-lane carriageways on both sides of the canal. The revised plan also includes developing a continuous green corridor with tree planting and construction of footpaths to improve pedestrian facilities.Officials also reviewed plans for redesigning junctions along the canal corridor based on traffic requirements and local conditions. The intersections will be upgraded to improve traffic movement, enhance road safety and provide better accessibility. The mayor and senior civic officials instructed engineers to expedite the project and ensure the work is carried out in a planned manner so that the canal corridor develops into a green, organised urban stretch with modern infrastructure.According to AMC officials, once completed, the project is expected to significantly improve road connectivity, traffic management and the overall urban landscape in the Kharicut canal area, while providing better public amenities for residents of eastern Ahmedabad.
