Nagpur: A 24-year-old man undergoing treatment at Regional Mental Hospital in Mankapur allegedly died by suicide in the bathroom of ward number 15 in the early hours of Saturday.As per hospital sources, the deceased had been a long-term patient who was repeatedly treated, rehabilitated and discharged, but his condition would deteriorate later, necessitating readmission. Mankapur police said a preliminary inquiry suggests there was no foul play involved.The deceased, a resident of Tumsar in Bhandara district, was found hanging around 2.30am. As per the hospital authorities, he allegedly used a bedsheet to hang himself from a window grille inside the bathroom.The duty medical officer of ward 15 reportedly immediately alerted hospital authorities. The medical superintendent subsequently informed the senior police inspector of Mankapur police station. The patient was shifted to Mayo Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.Hospital records show the deceased was admitted to Regional Mental Hospital on March 28 this year by his mother following an order issued by a court in Mouda. Sources said he had been diagnosed with an unspecified psychotic disorder and had a long history of schizophrenia.The patient had reportedly been admitted to the hospital on multiple occasions over the past few years, including on May 1, 2024, July 20, 2024, and Oct 16, 2025. Officials claimed the family did not always cooperate fully with the treatment process, although hospital staff continued to provide care.The hospital has requested police to take custody of the body and hand it over to the family after autopsy.Based on information received from the hospital, Mankapur police have registered an accidental death case. Police said the matter is under investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the death.
