Prayagraj: The water level of twin rivers – Ganga and Yamuna – on Wednesday witnessed a steep rise alerting the district authorities to maintain a close watch.According to district officials, the water level of Ganga at Phaphamau and Chhatnag rose up to 31cm and 14 cm respectively while the level of Yamuna river also rose up to 18 cm.On Wednesday, the water level of Ganga at Phaphamau and Chhatnag was recorded as 78.32 and 74.59 metre respectively, while the level of Yamuna at Naini was 74.96 metre. The danger mark of both rivers is 84.73 metre. Flood control division officials said, “Although the water level of both rivers was flowing below the danger mark but strict vigil is being maintained after acknowledging the rise in water level”. Officials said that with incessant rains and release of water from barrages, it is expected that water level of both rivers will be increasing in days to come. The water level of Yamuna has also been rising as other small rivers joining it.If the similar condition continues, the low lyinga areas of the district will be under administration’s scanner. The administration has also prepared a list of areas which are affected every year when the water level of Ganga and Yamuna rises. The list includes areas like Rajapur, Ganga Nagar, Sangam, Nagvasuki, Daraganj, Baghara, Chandpur Salori, Sadiyabad and Rasoolabad.“The recent rain in neighbouring states might cause flooded river Chambal and its tributaries, which in turn have led to an increase in water level of rivers in UP. The district flood control unit is collecting hourly updates,” said a district official.
