Mangaluru: The department of pre-university education (DPUE) has launched targeted academic support such as special classes, individual attention for II PU students who failed one or more subjects in the first preparatory examination. The final exam will begin on Feb 28.Bharath S, director of DPUE, Bengaluru, said that the department will focus on students who fell short in one or two subjects and continue concentrated preparation through the final examination. Under the plan, students are being asked to attend college regularly, instead of studying at home, with faculty members conducting special classes and revision sessions aimed at improving performance in weaker papers. He said that the department expects the pass percentage to improve in the second preparatory examination and the final exam due to the sustained, subject-specific intervention.
He said subjects posing difficulties vary across districts. “It is English in some areas, economics in others. This has prompted the department to let colleges tailor support based on local performance trends instead of adopting a uniform statewide approach,” he said.In Dakshina Kannada, government PU colleges recorded around a 66% pass rate in the first preparatory exam. Jayanand Suvarna, president of the District PU College Principals’ Association, said students commonly struggle with English, economics, accountancy, business studies and physics. “To ensure better results, attendance has been made mandatory until the exams begin. If given study holidays, many students stay home without studying, and some even take up part-time jobs,” Suvarna said. The remedial drive comes after the first preparatory exam results revealed that nearly half the students failed in at least one subject.
