Chennai: After years of delay, Southern Railway has opened a prepaid air-conditioned waiting hall at Tambaram Railway Station that can be used by all passengers with a valid ticket, irrespective of travel class.The hall is located at the western entry concourse of the station and was built at a cost of 20 lakh. With seating enough for 80 people, the hall will be open round the clock. Interiors include sofa sets, recliner chairs, and a rack for luggage.Charges are 35 per hour. Children aged 5-12 years pay 20 per hour, while those under five use the hall free of cost. No prior booking is required. Amenities include free Wi-Fi, mobile charging points, drinking water, a digital display board showing train details, and a public announcement system. Restrooms for men and women are available. There is also a feeding room.V Santhanam, a Chromepet resident, said, “It is a welcome move by the Southern Railways. The platform at Tambaram station is too long for the elderly to walk on. It will help if the department introduces a buggy service.”
