Coimbatore: The Salem division of Southern Railway has registered nearly 13% increase in freight loading in the 2025-26 financial year.As per the data available with the division, it loaded 3.22 million tonnes of freight during 2025-26, earning revenues of Rs337.32 crore, compared to 2.85 million tonnes in 2024-25 fiscal, earning revenues of R305.83 crore. An official source said the division mainly handles the freight from Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, CONCOR, India Cements, Chettinad Cement Corporation Private Limited, JSW Steel Limited and Bull Machines Private Limited. The freight loaded includes petroleum products, cement, iron & steel blooms and containers. “Petroleum products formed the major chunk of freight loaded. A little more than two million tonnes of petroleum products were loaded from Irugur in Coimbatore, fetching a revenue of Rs256.50 crore.” The division also registered an increase in the transportation of parcels by 22.02%. It loaded 6,23,879-quintal of parcels during 2025-26, earning Rs25.47 crore, against 5,11,309-quintal in 2024-25, earning sRs21.49 crore.
