Ahmedabad: A woman from Punjab, who started from her home to reach her parents’ home in Maharashtra, was rescued at Kalupur railway station in an inebriated state. A co-passenger on the train dialled Abhayam 181 women’s helpline.The woman, somewhere along the journey, managed to procure alcohol and consumed it. When the train pulled into Kalupur railway station, 181 responders escorted the woman off the train.Once she sobered up, the woman provided her identity and contact details, allowing counsellors to reach out to both her father and her husband.The husband, after reaching Ahmedabad, allegedly informed officials that his wife had an alcohol and tobacco addiction.He alleged that the addictions fuelled the very arguments she was trying to run away from.Counsellors discovered the altercation had turned physical.The husband was sporting a heavily bandaged hand, allegedly the result of being struck by his wife before she fled, according to details provided by counsellors.Afraid of police action and legal repercussions, the woman initially refused to share her identity. It took reassurances from the Abhayam team that they would hear both sides out without bias, for her to finally open up.Breaking down, she admitted to counsellors that this was the first time she had ever packed her bags after a fight.She confessed that she turned to alcohol on the train to drown her fears. “The cross-country episode wrapped up on Sunday when the husband officially took her home,” said the counsellor.The woman left the station with a promise to authorities that she would make efforts towards de-addiction.
