Kolkata: Indiscriminate use of loudspeakers during fests at Jadavpur University, especially after 10 pm, has prompted a Selimpur resident to write to the university authorities. He also mentioned in the letter that as per the court judgment no institute can hold any programme under the students’ union banner. Science Faculty Students’ Union was organising Sanskriti, their annual fest from March 25 to March 28. “Loud noise after 10 pm at night disrupted our daily lives. Small kids, elderly people and those who have health issues are severely affected by such indiscriminate use of loudspeakers till late night. We try to adjust to this excessive noise if it is till 10 pm. This is common every year,” he wrote in the letter. In the letter, he raised concern about “how fest is being organised under a students’ union banner when the high court has directed that no union activities will happen till fresh union elections take place.” JU last held union elections in 2020.Registrar Selim Box Mandal said, “I did not see the letter. I will check it on Monday and comment. However, students should abide by the noise regulation rules.” A student said,”The fest is organised by the students. No union now has official office bearers. The university has a committee which grants permission and monitors the events. We admit that we should have been more responsible.”
