Prayagraj: In a significant boost to water conservation efforts, Prayagraj has witnessed a remarkable improvement in groundwater levels this year, with more than 150 monitoring locations across urban and rural areas registering a rise in the water table.According to data collected by the Groundwater department ahead of the monsoon season, groundwater levels were monitored through 174 piezometers installed across the district. The annual assessment, conducted every May before the onset of monsoon rains, revealed encouraging signs of groundwater recharge in a majority of locations during 2026.One of the most notable findings was recorded in the city’s Hashimpur area, where the groundwater level has improved by more than 11 metres compared to last year, making it the highest rise in the district. Equally significant was the improvement witnessed in Koraon, a rocky and water-stressed region where authorities often have to rely on tanker-based water supply. Koraon emerged as the second-best performing area in terms of groundwater recharge, indicating the positive impact of conservation measures.Among the locations recording substantial improvement was Sarojini Naidu Child Care Centre in the urban area, where the groundwater level rose from 23.32 metres in 2025 to 11.89 metres in 2026. Improvement was also observed at Primary School Sirokhar in Koraon (10.50 m to 4.04 m), Mauaima BDO office (14.16 m to 9.55 m), Primary School Diha in Karchhana (9.16 m to 6.26 m), Jagatabd Inter College in Pratappur (8.30 m to 5.47 m) and Primary School Arai in Handia (7.45 m to 4.62 m).However, the survey also highlighted pockets of concern. The sharpest decline was recorded at Babura in Karchhana, where the groundwater level dropped by more than eight metres. Other locations registering significant depletion included Nanura Chauraha in Karchhana, where the level fell from 3.07 metres in 2025 to 11.71 metres this year. Declines were also reported at Phulpur, Hanumanganj, Civil Lines (urban pocket), etc.Hydrologist Aviral Singh said that groundwater levels generally declined across most monitoring stations during the past few years. “This year, however, the water table has risen at a majority of locations compared to last year. It is an encouraging sign and indicates that groundwater conservation and recharge efforts are yielding results. People have also become more aware about water conservation,” he said.He added that areas showing improvement must continue implementing rainwater harvesting and other conservation measures to ensure the gains are sustained in the coming years. The latest findings suggest that coordinated efforts by authorities and growing public awareness are beginning to reverse the long-standing trend of groundwater depletion in Prayagraj.Localities shoing rise in water levelsLocation 2025 (m) 2026 (m) ImprovementHashimpur (Urban) 23.32 11.89 11.43 mRamnagar Uruva 13.24 6.60 6.64 mSirokhar, Koraon 10.50 4.04 6.46 mMauaima BDO Office 14.16 9.55 4.61 mLocalities with decrease in water levelsLocation 2025 (m) 2026 (m) DeclineNanura Chauraha, Karchhana 3.07 11.71 8.64 mMadheya Naini 13.09 16.69 3.60 mDulampur, Phulpur 16.07 18.96 2.89 mBabuganj, Phulpur 5.50 8.28 2.78 m
