Ranchi: Ranchi MP Sanjay Seth and mayor Roshni Khalkho on Sunday inspected two plots, including a site opposite Pandra police station, and said a proposal would soon be sent to the govt for developing a vendor market in the area.“Out of the two plots, one is out of RMC’s jurisdiction, and the other plot is adjacent to the agriculture department’s office. On Monday, the land records will be checked to find out whether the plot can be used for building a market to protect the livelihoods of street vendors in the area,” Khalkho said. She said the move seeks to protect vendors who faced repeated eviction drives, affecting their survival. “RMC has been planning to build such vendor markets at the city’s Daily Market, Khadgarha bus stand and two markets in Morabadi area to protect the rights of street vendors. Also, another market in Dhurwa area is in the pipeline,” Khalkho added.Seth said the proposed Pandra project also envisages a shelter and clean toilet facilities for daily wage labourers at the site, ensuring civic amenities for workers and small traders. The site visit followed unrest after RMC’s July 4 anti-encroachment drive at Morabadi, where dozens of vegetable vendors who had set up stalls twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, for years were evicted. They were barred from returning on Wednesday, prompting some to stage a sit-in in front of the RMC office later that day.
