Kolkata: Two cases of alleged assault on police were registered in Kolkata this week, with one incident reported in Anandapur during an attempted arrest and another in Kasba involving an on-duty officer. In the first case, Anandapur police registered a case after an attempt to arrest a suspect on Sunday turned ugly, leading to the raiding team being barricaded and assaulted by women protesters. A case under Sections 221, 132 and 54 of the BNS was registered. According to the complaint lodged by Sunil Sardar, a sub-inspector of Anandapur PS, he and other police personnel reached West Chowbaga around 5.10 pm to arrest FIR-named theft accused Firoz Sk, 33. Police alleged that family members of the accused obstructed officers and deterred them from carrying out their duty. The persons named in the complaint are Sahana Khatun, Sany Begum, Sana Khatun and Firoz Sk. The women could not be arrested because adequate lady police personnel were not available. In the second case, registered on the basis of a complaint by Rabi Biswas, a sub-inspector of Kasba PS, police alleged that accused Ranjit Kumar Shaw, 48, a resident of Picnic Garden Road, physically assaulted and used force against Biswas and other police personnel while they went to his house for a routine enquiry. The alleged assault took place on Wednesday evening. Following the incidents, Lalbazar issued a directive to cops to ensure that body cameras are switched on during duty and that footage is preserved for six months. Officers were also reminded to accept fines only through official mobile applications.
