Mangaluru: The playground on the Mangalore University (MU) campus that hosted the centenary commemoration of the Mahatma Gandhi–Sri Narayana Guru meeting is set to be renamed the ‘Brahmashri Narayana Guru – Gandhi Centenary Dialogue Playground’, following a proposal moved at a recent MU syndicate meeting.Syndicate member Raghuraj said the renaming agenda was placed before the syndicate after the Dec 3, 2025 event held to commemorate the centenary of the Gandhi-Narayana Guru dialogue, which drew thousands to the ground located under the Konaje gram panchayat. The event was organised by the university to mark the centenary of the historic dialogue.MU registrar Ganesh Sanjeev said the renaming was announced on the day of the commemoration, when chief minister Siddaramaiah spoke about it, and that the move was also backed by local MLA and assembly speaker U T Khader. He said the proposal was subsequently discussed at the syndicate meeting, and an official notification would be issued soon.University officials said the ground, used largely for local events and sports such as cricket and not for religious purposes, did not have an official name. It was earlier considered for a 400m track during the tenures of former vice-chancellors B Hanumaiah and K M Kaveriappa, but the plan was dropped, and the track was built elsewhere.
