Kanpur: Devotees across the city celebrated Krishna Janmashtami with devotion and religious fervour on Friday and Saturday. As the clock struck midnight, conch shells, temple bells and chants of ‘Jai Kanhaiya Lal Ki’ reverberated across the city as devotees marked the birth of Lord Krishna at temples and homes.Devotees performed traditional rituals and offered prayers before distributing prasad among family members and visitors. Major celebrations were organised at JK Temple, Iskcon temple and Sanatan Dharm Mandir, besides several other temples across the city.The temples were illuminated with colourful lights and decorated with flowers. Several temples also displayed elaborate tableaux depicting various episodes from the life of Lord Krishna and other mythological stories.Artists presented episodes from Lord Krishna’s life through plays and devotional songs. A large number of children dressed up as Bal Krishna added to the festive atmosphere. Fireworks were also organised on the temple premises later in the night.At the Iskcon temple, students presented shlokas and bhajans during the celebrations. Following prayers and rituals, bhog was offered to the deity and prasad distributed among devotees. The floral decorations and richly embroidered clothes adorning the Radha-Krishna deities were among the major attractions.Janmashtami was also celebrated with religious fervour at Sanatan Dharm Mandir, where devotees sang Krishna bhajans and participated in special prayers. Similar celebrations were held at temples in different parts of the city.Kanpur district jail inmates observed the festival with devotion and participated in religious rituals. Inmates recited bhajans and offered prayers as part of the festivities.
