‘Namma Shala Varthegalu’ by students of Government High School, Badaga Yekkar

Mangaluru: In an innovative blend of education and media, govt schools in Dakshina Kannada are producing their own news bulletins, with students taking charge as reporters, anchors, scriptwriters and presenters. At Government High School, Badaga Yekkar, a zero-budget initiative called ‘Namma Shala Varthegalu’ has emerged as one of the school’s most distinctive programmes. Since its launch last year, the school has produced 11 episodes, each uploaded to its YouTube channel. Every 8-10 minute bulletin carries around 14 news stories, with each episode presented in one of five languages, Kannada, English, Tulu, Konkani or Hindi.English teacher Anith Kumar, who mentors the initiative, said the primary objective is to keep parents informed about school activities while developing students’ language and presentation skills. “The programme teaches students how to gather information, write concise news reports and present it effectively. It enhances communication skills, pronunciation, teamwork and confidence,” he said. The production is largely student-driven. The school’s ‘minister for information and public relations’, class IX student Sanvi, coordinates news collection, while a panel of student reporters selects stories. Teachers assist in refining the scripts and training students in presentation. As the school relies entirely on free software, producing each monthly episode takes nearly 13.5 hours of recording and editing. English remains the most challenging language, requiring additional coaching in pronunciation and delivery. Teachers actively support the initiative to maintain quality across all five languages, said Anith. The programme has earned appreciation from state officials of the school education department, and has also enhanced the school’s visibility. The growing recognition has contributed to an increase in enrolment, with student strength rising to 147 this academic year.‘Kolchar News’ turns school events into student-led broadcastsA similar initiative is also being undertaken at the Govt Upgraded Primary School, Kolchar, in Sullia, where students produce ‘Kolchar News’ whenever the school hosts a major event. From the inauguration of LKG and UKG classes to other special programmes, primary school students present news bulletins that are shared on parents’ WhatsApp groups, helping the school stay connected with the community.Kannada teacher Jalajakshi KD said the initiative gives children an opportunity to overcome stage fear while improving their language and communication skills. “Presenting news builds confidence and helps children express themselves better,” she said.English teacher Ranganath MS handles the technical aspects of recording and editing, while teachers mentor students in scripting and presentation. Most bulletins are produced in Kannada or English, with teachers also joining the broadcasts. The response from parents has been encouraging. Teachers attribute part of the school’s growing popularity to the initiative, with enrolment increasing from 113 students last year to 129 this academic year.
