Kanpur: Moderate to heavy showers lashed Kanpur on Saturday evening, bringing long-awaited relief from the oppressive humidity and lowering the mercury by nearly 3°C. But the welcome spell of rain also laid bare the city’s fragile drainage infrastructure, with waterlogged roads and traffic snarls disrupting normal life across several localities.Major thoroughfares resembled canals as rainwater accumulated in low-lying areas, leaving office-goers stranded in slow-moving traffic during the evening rush hour. Commuters struggled to navigate submerged stretches, with several neighbourhoods witnessing severe waterlogging.The city witnessed intermittent light to moderate showers through the day, while high humidity kept conditions uncomfortable until the evening downpour.

The weather observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 33.3°C and a minimum of 26.8°C, with relative humidity hovering above 90%, making the atmosphere persistently muggy.According to SN Sunil Pandey, weather expert at the Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology (CSA), the university’s automatic weather station recorded 12.7 mm of rainfall on Saturday. He said the evening showers provided significant respite from the sultry weather that had gripped the city over the past few days.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast an active southwest monsoon across the Kanpur division over the next 24 hours. Light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph is likely during the afternoon and evening, with weather conditions expected to become more dynamic after humid daytime spells.The IMD expects Kanpur’s maximum temperature to remain between 33°C and 34°C, while high humidity will continue during the day. Evening and night hours are likely to witness fresh spells of rain, thunderstorms and lightning.Dr Pandey said fresh weather systems and increased atmospheric moisture are expected to keep the Kanpur division under cloudy skies between July 25 and July 29. During this period, isolated areas may experience gusty surface winds, scattered drizzle and light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.He added that intermittent sunshine between rain spells could sustain humid conditions despite the active monsoon phase. Meteorologists have advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorms and heavy rain, warning that low-lying areas may continue to face localized waterlogging and traffic disruptions.
