NEW DELHI: Delhi Police have arrested a 37-year-old man for allegedly murdering a three-year-old girl whose body was recovered from a drain in Kapashera.Police said a missing complaint regarding the child was received at Kapashera police station on the evening of July 10, following which an FIR was registered under Section 137(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and an investigation was launched.During the intervening night of July 14 and 15, police received information that the body of a child had been found in the Kapashera drain near FIMT College, news agency ANI reported.The deceased was identified as the missing three-year-old girl.A Crime Team inspected the spot, and the post-mortem examination confirmed that the child had been murdered before her body was dumped in the drain.During the investigation, police analysed CCTV footage and identified a suspect, Chandan Kumar, 37, a resident of Ballia in Uttar Pradesh, whose movements were found to be suspicious.On Wednesday, a police team raided his hideout in Kapashera village.According to police, Kumar allegedly opened fire when officers attempted to arrest him, ANI reported.Police said that, while exercising the right of private defence and to effect the arrest, the team fired one round, injuring Kumar in his left leg. He was subsequently arrested.A country-made pistol and one live cartridge were recovered from his possession, police said.During preliminary interrogation, Kumar allegedly confessed to murdering the three-year-old girl.The investigation also revealed that the accused was the victim’s neighbour and lived in the same building as her.He was shifted to a hospital for medical treatment after his arrest.Police said Kumar works as a tailor and had been living in Kapashera. His wife and five-year-old son reside in their native village in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh.Police said further investigation is underway, and efforts are being made to ascertain the motive behind the murder.Appropriate legal action is being taken in accordance with the law, officials added.(With agency inputs)
