Guwahati: Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University (KKHSOU) has secured UGC-DEB approval to offer science programmes through open and distance learning.Vice-chancellor Rajendra Prasad Das said the recognition was a milestone for Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University, the only public open university in the northeast.“Earlier, we did not have a science programme, except MSc Mathematics. Three days ago, we secured approval for MSc in physics, MSc in chemistry, BSc mathematics and master of library and information science,” Das said.He said KKHSOU has also become the first university in the region to be recognised by the National Council for Vocational Education and Training as an awarding and assessment body for skill-based and vocational courses. The university has received approval for a solar panel installation course, while approval for geriatric care is awaited.Registrar Pranab Saikia said admissions, which began on July 1, will continue till Aug 31. The university, which has 1.5 lakh students and 344 study centres, is targeting 50,000 admissions this session.Saikia said the examination system has been tightened, with final exams to be held in about 110 CCTV-equipped centres. Admit cards will have QR codes, attendance will be recorded in real time, and answer scripts from centres reporting irregularities will be evaluated separately.
