Ganderbal, Oct 8: To strengthen the fight against tuberculosis, Central University of Kashmir (CUKashmir) launched its 100-Day TB Awareness & Elimination Campaign under the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan 2026, bringing together academicians, healthcare experts and students for a sustained campaign towards a TB-Free India.
The initiative is being jointly organised by the Health Centre, Directorate of Students’ Welfare (DSW), NSS and NCC and the campaign is spearheaded by Dr. Abid Ahmad Sofi, Medical Officer and Nodal Officer, TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan 2026, CUKashmir.
In his welcome address, Dr. Abid gave an overview of the TB-Free India 2026 campaign and said the TB awareness initiative underlines the institution’s commitment to contribute meaningfully to the national TB elimination mission.
Addressing the gathering, Registrar, Dr. Nisar Ahmad Mir, underscored the importance of collective and sustained efforts in achieving the objectives of the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan. He highlighted the need for greater awareness among the younger generation and called upon students, faculty and staff to actively contribute towards spreading correct information about TB, encouraging early detection and supporting the national goal of eliminating tuberculosis.
Dean, School of Education, Prof. (Dr.) C. Naseema, appreciated the efforts of the Health Centre in organising regular health-awareness programmes and health-screening camps for the University community.
She acknowledged the Health Centre’s continued efforts to promote preventive healthcare and expressed appreciation for its proactive role in taking health awareness beyond routine medical services.
During the technical session, noted specialist in respiratory medicine, Dr. Naveed Nazir, Professor at Chest Disease Hospital, delivered a detailed lecture on “Tuberculosis: Clinical Aspects, Diagnosis & Management.” He discussed the clinical dimensions of TB and the importance of appropriate diagnosis and management.
Dr. Mir Shahnawaz, Consultant Respiratory Physician and Interventional Pulmonologist, spoke about “Tuberculosis: Awareness, Prevention & Elimination,” sensitizing participants about the importance of awareness, preventive measures, timely diagnosis and collective action in the fight against TB.
The programme also featured the TB-Free India 2026 Public Pledge, with participants reaffirming their commitment towards a TB-free society.
Dean DSW, Dr. Jehirul Islam, Nursing Officer Mr. Javid Ahmad Rather, Lab Technician Mr. Suhail Shafi, and Medical Attendant/Dresser Mr. Javid Ali Khan were present. Dr. Rehan Shawl conducted the programme proceedings and Dr. Sheeba Nazir proposed the vote of thanks.
