Ahmedabad: A 21-year-old competitive exam aspirant was arrested by the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Ahmedabad city police on Wednesday for allegedly possessing about Rs 10 lakh worth of mephedrone (MD) near the riverfront road in Ellisbridge, officials said on Thursday.Acting on a tip-off, SOG personnel intercepted Nayyar Raza Mufid Ahmed Qureshi near the Mahakali Mata temple, behind Patang Hotel, on the road leading to the Sabarmati riverfront. During a search, police recovered 94.86g of mephedrone valued at Rs 9.48 lakh. Including other seized items, the total value of the muddamal was estimated at Rs 9.54 lakh, officers said.Qureshi, a native of Abu Road in Rajasthan and currently residing near Kalupur Tower in Ahmedabad, was enrolled in TT examination coaching classes at a private institute in the city. During preliminary questioning, he allegedly told police that he had procured the contraband from one Sohail Baloch, also a resident of Abu Road.According to investigators, the drugs were transported to Ahmedabad by Baloch along with another associate, Naeem Sheikh. A portion of the consignment was allegedly supplied to a local contact, Salman Sheikh, while the remaining quantity was sold in small packets to customers in the city to meet Qureshi’s personal expenses.A case was registered at the DCB police station under Sections 8(c), 22(c) and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
