Koppal: The public sit-in protest opposing the proposed large private steel plant and other polluting industries in the district completed 100 days on Saturday, with the Joint Action Committee spearheading the agitation and organising a large convention to mark the occasion.The convention witnessed participation of several prominent religious leaders, social activists, and noted writers. Among those who addressed the gathering were Panditaradhya Shivacharya Swamiji of Sanehalli, Siddarama Swamiji of Tontadarya Mutt in Gadag, writer Ramjan Darga, and theatre personality Suryakanta GunakiMath.
Speakers reiterated concerns over environmental degradation, public health risks, and the impact of industrial pollution on agriculture and livestock in the region.Addressing the gathering, Sanehalli Panditaradhya Shivacharya Swamiji called upon the people of Koppal to unite against what he described as unchecked industrial activity. The seer called for strict action against polluting industries.The meeting further resolved to conduct a comprehensive health survey in 20 pollution-affected villages, initiate the relocation of factories as per expert recommendations, and close industries allegedly polluting the Tungabhadra River. Until permanent solutions are implemented, the committee demanded the supply of treated drinking water for residents and livestock.The convention also demanded the immediate restoration of the Basapur lake for public use and resolved to oppose the granting of environmental clearance for the expansion of another steel factory.As part of the programme, Manjunath Sajjan organised a blood donation camp in association with the Red Cross Society.Literary figures Ramjan Darga and Suryakant GunakiMath, District Lawyers Association president AV Kanavi, general convener Allama Prabhu Bettadur, and several other prominent citizens participated in the event.
