Kanpur: A 25-year-old man allegedly died by suicide in Kanpur’s Colonelganj area late Saturday, two days after he was allegedly assaulted and threatened by a group of men over speaking to a woman from the neighbourhood. Before taking the extreme step, he reportedly posted several emotional stories and two reels on Instagram.In one of the videos posted before his death, the deceased is heard saying, “Don’t worry, my love; I won’t give you the chance to see my shroud, let alone my face.”The deceased, identified as Suraj Gautam, was found hanging after neighbours broke open the door of his room and alerted the police. Police reached the spot, conducted a preliminary investigation and sent the body for postmortem.Suraj’s mother, Lakshmi, alleged that on Thursday, more than half a dozen influential local men barged into their house, brutally assaulted her son and pressed a country-made pistol to his temple while threatening to kill him because he had spoken to a woman from the neighbourhood. She alleged that the incident left him traumatised and drove him to take the extreme step.Lakshmi, who lives in the Eidgah Peeli Building area and supports the family by working as a domestic help, said that after the death of her husband, Munnilal, she was living with her son, while her daughter, Mauni, is married. She said that when she returned home from work late Saturday, she found the room locked from inside. After repeated calls went unanswered, neighbours broke open the door in the presence of police and found Suraj hanging.Colonelganj Station House Officer Vineet Chaudhary said police were investigating the allegations on the basis of the complaint lodged by the deceased’s mother.
