Varanasi: Following an encounter, Azamgarh police on Monday arrested two members of an inter-district gang of robbers, while their accomplice managed to flee. The miscreants arrested were injured in the leg and sent to hospital for treatment. Police recovered two illegal country-made pistols, two missed cartridges, two empty cartridge shells, a motorcycle and a gold chain.According to reports, a woman lodged complaint at Kandharapur police station on Mar 26 that her gold chain was snatched near Bijaura Colony and fled while she was returning from Bhawarnath Temple. CO (City) Shubham Todi said a case was registered and continuous raids were conducted to arrest the accused. Investigation reveleased that the accused were involved in theft, robbery and snatching incidents in Azamgarh, Ghazipur and surrounding districts. Acting on a tip-off regardding movement of inter-district criminals from Kishundaspur towards Kamhenpur, a team led by inspector in charge Anurag Kumar on Monday cordoned the area near the culvert close to Chandra Rishi Ashram. Seeing the cops, the accused attempted to flee, causing their motorcycle to skid and fall into a ditch. Seeing themselves surrounded, the three accused took hid behind bushes and opened fire at the police. In etaliatory action, two of the accused were injured, while one managed to flee from the spot. The robbers were identified as Shivam Sahani alias Anurag and Raj Nishad, both residents of Rahul Nagar Madya in Kotwali police station area of Azamgarh. The absconding Chhotu Singh is a resident of Ghazipur district.
