T’puram: In a case taken up by state human rights commission, the family of a BDS student who was killed in a road accident has been awarded compensation of Rs 1 crore by Adani Ports, district collector informed the commission.The directive came after SHRC chairperson Justice Alexander Thomas sought detailed information regarding compensation provided to the victim’s family. The amount was subsequently sanctioned and disbursed. The accident occurred on March 19, 2024, along Vizhinjam–Balaramapuram road near Mukkola petrol pump. A lorry carrying granite stones to Vizhinjam Port reportedly fell into a pothole, causing stones to be dislodged. One of the stones struck Ananthu, who was riding a motorcycle, leading to his death. According to the collector’s report submitted to SHRC, the deceased was the sole breadwinner of his family, which is burdened with financial liabilities. The report highlighted the severe hardship faced by the dependants following the incident. The collector also informed the commission that recommendations have been made to the state govt to extend maximum possible assistance from the chief minister’s distress relief fund. Additionally, a proposal has been submitted seeking a govt job for the victim’s sister as part of rehabilitation support for the bereaved family. The panel registered the case suo motu based on media reports highlighting the fatal accident and the family’s plight. The incident earlier raised concerns over the safety of transporting construction materials to Vizhinjam port project, particularly along busy public roads. Authorities are expected to further review safety protocols to prevent similar accidents in the future.
