Kanpur: A 19-year-old youth succumbed to his injuries on Monday after he was allegedly beaten with an iron rod by nine people, including a father and son, in Naubasta on the night of July 18. According to the victim’s family, the assault took place after he protested the alleged beating of an elderly woman.Rahul Tiwari was declared dead at around 3 am on Monday at Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital, where he and his uncle, Santosh Kumar Tiwari, had been admitted in serious condition with head injuries. Police sent the body for postmortem examination.Naubasta police station in-charge Bahadur Singh said a case has been registered against nine accused under sections related to culpable homicide not amounting to murder. “Three suspects have been taken into custody and are being questioned,” he added.Rahul’s maternal uncle, Ashish Kumar Dixit, a resident of Swarn Jayanti Vihar Sector-6, said Rahul worked as a waiter at marriage functions with contractor Deepak Rajput and had gone that night to deliver food to an elderly woman living in the neighbourhood.According to the family, neighbours Lallu and Kallu threw water on the elderly woman and started kicking her. When Rahul protested and tried to intervene, the accused allegedly turned violent and attacked him with sticks and batons. They also assaulted his uncle Santosh, who came to intervene.Ashish alleged that after the family returned from Kanshiram Hospital, where the injured had received treatment, the accused again entered their house around 2.30 am and attacked them with an iron rod.He further alleged that even after police reached the spot on being informed, the accused continued pelting stones at their house in the presence of cops.
