Prayagraj: After witnessing an extended dry spell and soaring temperature, Prayagraj finally received a welcome change with the arrival of monsoon. On Wednesday, the city witnessed cooler temperatures and heavy to scattered rainfall. After ranking among the hottest cities in the country for the past two weeks, the Sangam city recorded a maximum temperature of 35.4 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, while the minimum settled at 27.6 degrees Celsius. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded 2.2 mm of rainfall in the city during the 24-hour period ending on Wednesday morning. Relative humidity remained significantly high at 74% in the morning and 83% in the evening, making the atmosphere feel distinctly ‘monsoon-like’.While several localities witnessed heavy showers on Tuesday night, others received only light rain. On Wednesday too, the pattern remained highly localised. Most parts of the urban area witnessed little or no rainfall during the day, whereas several rural pockets received moderate to heavy showers, reflecting the patchy nature of monsoon activity. The weather department has forecast the possibility of heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph on July 2 and 3.Heavy overnight showers in several parts of Prayagraj led to waterlogging in low-lying localities, causing problems for commuters. Vehicular movement on roads in areas including Rajrooppur, Kalindipuram and Civil Lines was disrupted due to accumulation of rainwater. The rainfall also affected power supply in several localities, with residents reporting intermittent outages after the downpour. Distribution feeders were shut down as a precautionary measure and due to technical faults in some areas. Normal supply was restored after maintenance work.
