Gurgaon: Ward 27 councillor Ashish Gupta was unanimously elected a member of the MCG’s finance and contracts committee (F&CC). The F&CC plays a significant role in the functioning of the municipal corporation, particularly in matters relating to municipal contracts, purchases and approvals for development works.Gupta was elected unopposed after no other councillor contested the position at a meeting chaired by mayor Raj Rani Malhotra on Thursday, completing the selection of the vacant elected-member slot on the key civic panel. TOI reported on Sept 29 that Gupta was likely to be elected unopposed as the F&CC member. According to the Haryana Municipal Corporation Act, 1994, the committee comprises mayor, senior deputy mayor, deputy mayor, two elected councillor-members and municipal commissioner. The corporation recently elected ward 28 councillor Dharmabir Bhangrola as senior deputy mayor and ward 25 councillor Anoop Singh as deputy mayor, both unopposed, after months of delay. After being elected as deputy mayor, the ward 25 councillor resigned as a member of the F&CC, creating a vacancy on the key civic panel. The deputy mayor is already a member of the F&CC by virtue of holding the post, along with the mayor and the senior deputy mayor, but Singh had also been elected unopposed as a councillor member of the committee when the elections for the two posts were held last year. The F&CC had already seen two councillors elected in Aug 2025 — Sundar Singh of ward 1 and Anoop Singh of ward 25 — both of whom were elected unopposed. The committee, as per the act, shall exercise all the powers of the corporation in relation to contracts to be entered into for and on its behalf and the purchases to be made by it.
