Yavatmal: A wedding was called off after a dispute arose over a man allegedly raising a demand with his fiancee’s family that the marriage ceremony be held in an air-conditioned hall in Yavatmal. Based on the complaint lodged by the woman, a case was registered against four members of the man’s family under the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, and other relevant provisions of law, police said.In her complaint filed at at Maregaon police station on April 1, the woman, a resident of a village in Maregaon taluka in Yavatmal district, said she was engaged to Mayur Suresh Giri( 33), a resident of Yavatmal, in Wani on March 1 in a cordial atmosphere. The complainant stated that no demands were made by the Giri’s family during the initial marriage talks. The marriage date had not been fixed but preparations had commenced, she stated. However, on March 4, Giri allegedly contacted the woman over the phone and insisted that the wedding be conducted in an air-conditioned hall. He allegedly asked her to convey this condition to her parents. When she suggested that he discuss the issue directly with her family, he allegedly disconnected the call abruptly.The woman later informed her parents about the demand. Her family attempted to initiate a dialogue, but Giri allegedly did not respond and instead conveyed that the marriage should be treated as cancelled, the complaint stated. This sudden decision reportedly left the woman’s family shocked and distressed.Based on the woman’s statement, police registered a case against Mayur Giri, his father Suresh, Namdev Bhaogir Giri and Satish Diwakar Giri.The unusual demand for an AC hall leading to the cancellation of a marriage has become a topic of discussion across the taluka.
