Kolkata: Amid a stand-off with students, Surendranath Law College vice-principal Mohammadi Tarannum issued a notice announcing special classes from Monday for students with low attendance. She also issued two other notices containing instructions for teachers and assigning duties to teaching and non-teaching staffers.However, protesting students decided not to follow the instructions.Tarannum clarified that she had not resigned, stating that she was forced to do so by a section of students and would attend office on Monday as usual. She told TOI, “I have already spoken with Calcutta University requesting to allow all the students who have attendance lower than 65%, but for the sake of the students’ interests, we planned some special classes for them to follow the rules of the Bar Council of India.”The notice stated that special classes would begin Monday at 6.30 am, following the prescribed routine, until the end-semester exams. It read: “Students and their parents are advised to regularly check and monitor their attendance through the ERP system.” If discrepancies are found, students should first approach the concerned teacher with a written application. One female teacher has been assigned to handle student matters. “Students and guardians are requested to follow the above mechanism and avoid making informal or unverified claims regarding attendance,” the notice said.Tarannum instructed teachers and staffers to follow the schedule, informing students in advance and making suitable arrangements if unable to attend. She also asked teachers to arrive at least 15 minutes before classes. Vineet Sharma, a second-year student, said, “Suddenly, she is trying to enforce discipline at the college where it was never present before. While our classes are scheduled for 6.30 am, they used to start at 7.30 or 8 am.”
