Ranchi: Courage, sacrifice and patriotic fervour marked Kargil Vijay Diwas celebrations across the state on Sunday, as people paid tribute to the soldiers who fought to reclaim strategic heights occupied by Pakistani forces during the 1999 conflict.At Namkum in Ranchi, Purv Sainik Sewa Parishad organised a programme honouring Kargil veterans para commando Arun Kumar Jha, subedars Lallan Kumar Singh and Vijay Kumar, and Naib Subedar N P Sinha.Addressing the gathering, chief guest Maj Gen (retd) B D Sharma said “Yeh dil maange more”, the famous words of Param Vir Chakra recipient Capt Vikram Batra after the capture of Point 5140, had transcended the battlefield to become an enduring symbol of the Army’s courage.

Recalling acts of extraordinary valour, Sharma said Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav continued to advance despite suffering multiple bullet injuries. He also remembered Param Vir Chakra recipient Lt Manoj Kumar Pandey, who led an assault on enemy positions despite being grievously wounded.Sharma saluted the war widows, saying they had sacrificed the most precious person in their lives for the nation. The families of fallen soldiers, he added, were the country’s “silent heroes”.Sharing his battlefield memories, Jha said troops had faced intense firing and grenade attacks while scaling the heights in the Drass sector. Despite suffering injuries, the soldiers kept advancing and eventually forced the enemy to retreat, he said.Earlier, members of the parishad took out a “tiranga yatra”, filling the area with patriotic slogans. Floral tributes were also offered to soldiers who died during the Kargil war.
