Chennai: The state govt on Friday inked a pact with US-headquartered Walgreens India Private Limited to establish its first-ever global capability centre (GCC) at DLF Downtown complex, Taramani. The initiative is expected to generate 250 jobs.The MoU was signed in the presence of chief minister C Joseph Vijay at the secretariat, industries minister S Keerthana, chief secretary M Sai Kumar, additional chief secretary for the industries, investment promotion and commerce S Vijaykumar and senior bureaucrats. The development comes a day after Vijay returned from his maiden foreign trip to London to attract investments.The state govt said the proposed investment would deliver an economic boost to Tamil Nadu by creating “250 high-value, specialised employment opportunities” in its first year. With provisions for future expansion, the centre will generate skilled job opportunities for local talent across technology, healthcare services and operational domains. It would accelerate the state’s industrial growth, said a statement from govt.Securing Walgreens’ first Indian facility highlights TN’s growing reputation as a preferred destination for multinational corporations and foreign investors, govt said. “The development directly supports the state govt’s targeted policy to attract high-value capability centres, strengthening the local digital ecosystem, driving innovation and reinforcing the state’s position as a premier global hub for technology and business services,” said the release. During the interaction, Vijay appealed to the representatives of the US firm to provide high-value jobs to youngsters from Tier II and Tier III cities in TN.
