Shillong: Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday said ultimate governance lay in serving people and that development was meaningful only when it improved citizens’ lives.Addressing a felicitation programme organised by the joint action committee for the govt’s One Time Settlement (OTS) scheme for commercial vehicles, Sangma said the govt took a “bold and difficult decision” to write off nearly Rs 850 crore to Rs 1,000 crore, citing the impact on about 16,000 truckers and their families. He said development should not be limited to large infrastructure projects and must translate into tangible benefits for ordinary citizens, adding that every decision should have real-life impact as a measure of governance.Responding to criticism that his govt focused only on large-scale projects, Sangma said infrastructure investment was being matched with people-centric measures, including resolving long-pending teachers’ issues, supporting farmers and empowering entrepreneurs.
