Kanpur: Two notorious criminals were injured in retaliatory police firing while their third accomplice was arrested after a late-night encounter in Jalaun district on Friday. Police said the trio allegedly opened fire while attempting to escape after being intercepted during a special anti-theft operation. Two illegal country-made pistols, cash, suspected stolen jewellery and the motorcycle used by the accused were recovered from their possession.The joint operation was carried out by the Rampura police and the SOG/Surveillance team as part of a special drive to crack a series of thefts in the police station area.

Around 11 pm, police received information from an informer that three suspicious youths were moving on an old HF Deluxe motorcycle on the Rampura-Ninavali road. Acting on the tip-off, SOG/Surveillance in-charge sub-inspector Rinku Chaudhary reached the spot with his team and, along with the local police, laid a cordon on the Ninavali route.Around 11:45 pm, police signalled a motorcycle approaching from the Ninavali bridge to stop, but the suspects allegedly tried to flee. During the chase, one accused ran towards nearby fields but was caught by the police. The two other accused allegedly opened fire on the police team. In self-defence, the police retaliated, injuring both. After the firing stopped, the police found the duo lying injured.The injured accused were identified as Brijendra Rajput, a resident of Bilgaon Pathariya Dera under Jalalpur police station in Hamirpur district, and Vivek Rajput alias Ikka, a resident of Khadehi Lodhan under Muskara police station in Hamirpur. The third accused, Sonu Yadav, a resident of Charkhari police station area in Mahoba district, was also arrested. Police said all three have multiple criminal cases registered against them.ASP Ishan Soni said the accused’s criminal history as well as possible involvement in other theft cases is being investigated.
