Shivamogga: In light of the intensifying El Niño effect across the state, and water inflows into reservoirs dropping to near zero, the Tunga Dam executive engineer has urged farmers not to cultivate any kharif (monsoon) crops relying on reservoir water this season.The official instructions come after Bhadra authorities issued a similar caution last week. The drought situation in the state was discussed in detail during the Cabinet meeting, on July 2, following which, chief minister DK Shivakumar stated that no farmer should sow crops relying on the reservoirs.As per the chief minister’s directives, an emergency situation has arisen where the water currently available in the reservoirs must be strictly reserved solely for drinking water purposes. In accordance with the govt circular, officials have been instructed to sensitise farmers about the situation and to coordinate efforts with respective regional commissioners and deputy commissioners, authorities informed.“An official notification was already issued on July 3, taking measures to release water into the Tunga Dam’s main canal and the Tunga Dam Canals strictly and exclusively for the drinking water needs.”Therefore, farmers are requested not to initiate the cultivation of any irrigated crops during the current kharif season. In a press release, the executive engineer appealed the farming community to understand the severity of the water crisis and cooperate fully with the department.Tunga dam’s canals supply water to various districts, including Haveri, which is located some 300 kilometres away.
