T’puram: A truck driver sustained serious injuries after a mass of boulders and loose earth fell onto his vehicle at a quarry in Maramuttam area of Kottakkal near Neyyattinkara on Saturday morning.According to the police, the incident occurred in the quarry, where several trucks had arrived and were parked to transport quarried materials. Huge rocks and soil that had loosened from the upper levels of the quarry’s rockface suddenly came crashing down onto one of the trucks parked below.The driver, identified as Anilkumar, was trapped inside the vehicle’s cabin and suffered grave injuries. Locals and police personnel rushed to the spot and managed to rescue him from the damaged cabin.Anilkumar was initially shifted to Govt General Hospital, Neyyattinkara. Considering the severity of his injuries, he was later referred to Govt Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram for further treatment.The truck was completely destroyed in the incident. No other injuries have been reported, police said.Marayimuttom Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident. They are also examining the circumstances that led to the sudden collapse of the rocks and earth from the quarry’s upper levels.
