T’puram: A 59-year-old man was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a 75-year-old woman who was staying alone at her house in Kadakkal on Saturday night. The accused was Pradeep Kumar, of Mannarakode near Chithara Valavupacha. The accused is also a resident of the locality and lives near the woman’s house. According to police, she raised an alarm during the incident, following which locals rushed to the house. The residents intervened and rescued the woman. They subsequently alerted the police, following which Kumar was taken into custody. Police registered a case based on the statement given by the survivor and arrested the accused. The woman was taken for a medical examination as part of the investigation. Police are also collecting evidence from the scene and recording statements of witnesses who reached the house after hearing her screams. The investigation team is examining the circumstances in which the accused entered the house and the sequence of events leading to the alleged assault. Since the accused lives in the vicinity of the survivor’s residence, police are also verifying the circumstances under which he allegedly gained access to the house. After completing the preliminary procedures, police produced Kumar before the court. He was remanded in judicial custody.
