Jaipur: The state transport department has directed all RTOs and DTOs to videograph the vehicle registration process to prevent registration of modified vehicles and fix accountability for lapses during inspection.Transport commissioner Purusottam Sharma said the move followed instances of vehicles being registered on the basis of chassis details even when their actual bodies were not ready.“Despite repeated instructions, we noticed that vehicles were being registered on the basis of chassis when the actual body was not even ready. Now, all registrations will have to be videographed for a minimum of 10 minutes. The inspector will be visible in the video, which will serve as proof that the vehicle was physically checked,” Sharma said.The video must capture the vehicle’s registration number, chassis number and the inspecting officer before it can be submitted. RTO and DTO offices have also been instructed to maintain backup copies of the videos on hard drives for a specified period.Sharma said the footage would help the department investigate cases in which a registered vehicle is later found to have been modified and involved in an accident.“If it is found that a modified vehicle has been approved, action will be taken against the vehicle owner as well as the transport official responsible for its inspection and approval,” he said.The commissioner said unauthorised vehicle modifications posed a road safety risk and that videography would help establish responsibility at the registration stage.The department has asked field offices to implement the videography requirement for all vehicle registrations and maintain the footage for future verification.
