T’puram: The city will witness extensive traffic restrictions on Sunday and Monday in connection with the Onam week celebrations and the visit of vice-president C P Radhakrishnan.Traffic restrictions for the Onam procession will come into effect from 2pm on Sunday. The procession will start from Kowdiar and pass through Vellayambalam, Museum, LMS, Statue, Overbridge, Pazhavangadi, East Fort, Vettimuricha Kotta, Mithranandapuram, West Fort, Enchakkal and Kallummoodu.Vehicles will not be permitted along the procession route and parking will also be prohibited. The police said vehicles parked along the notified roads and other roads obstructing traffic would be removed using recovery vehicles and legal action would be initiated.Traffic diversions have been prescribed for vehicles heading towards Thampanoor and East Fort from different parts of the city. Vehicles from MC Road will be diverted through Mannanthala, Kudappanakunnu, Peroorkada, Pippinmoodu, Sasthamangalam, Edapazhanji, SMC, Vazhuthacaud and Thycaud. Vehicles from Kazhakkoottam will be diverted through the Kazhakkoottam flyover, Mukkola, Kuzhivila, Chackai flyover, Enchakkal, Kottalam, Subhash Nagar, Attakulangara and Killippalam.Vehicles from Pattom will be diverted through Marappalam, Kowdiar, Golf Links, Peroorkada, Pippinmoodu and Sasthamangalam before proceeding towards Thycaud. Traffic from East Fort towards Chackai will be routed through Attakulangara and Enchakkal.Additional restrictions will be imposed during the VP’s visit. On Monday, between 5am and 9am, vehicular movement from the domestic airport and Shanghumugham towards Chackai, and from Chackai towards Asan Square and Raj Bhavan, will not be allowed.The police have designated several parking facilities, including Tagore Theatre, Jimmy George Indoor Stadium, PWD compound at PMG, Corporation Office, Water Authority compound at Vellayambalam, Arts College ground, University College ground, Music College ground and parking facilities at Thampanoor and Chackai.People travelling to Thampanoor and Kochuveli railway stations and the international and domestic airports have been advised to plan their journeys in advance. Ambulances and emergency vehicles should avoid the procession route.
