T’puram: A 45-year-old hotel worker was killed after the two-wheeler he was riding plunged into a 15ft-deep pit beside a narrow pathway at Kuryathi near Kuttichal on Wednesday night.The accident occurred around midnight when the Kuttichal native, Shanavas, was returning home after work.According to locals, Shanavas was riding along the narrow pathway leading to his house when he lost control of the two-wheeler and fell into the pit. The pathway runs close to a property where the owner had removed a large quantity of soil several months ago. This had left a steep drop along the side of the pathway.Shanavas sustained serious injuries and was killed in the accident.Kattakada Police reached the spot and shifted the body to MCH for autopsy.Following the accident, locals and relatives staged a protest, demanding immediate measures to make the pathway safe and accessible. They also sought compensation for Shanavas’ family and construction of a retaining wall along the dangerous stretch.The police held discussions with the owner of the adjoining property. During the talks, the owner assured the locals that compensation would be provided and proper access to the houses would be arranged. The residents were assured that the compensation and access arrangements would be completed by Saturday.
