Chennai: Tamil Nadu recorded its highest-ever solar energy contribution on Friday, even as overall electricity demand surged amid intensifying summer conditions. According to the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL), solar power generation touched a record 55.60 million units (MU), marginally surpassing the previous day’s 55.50 MU. The state also evacuated 7,189 MW of solar energy, aided by clear skies and the absence of rainfall.Power consumption rose sharply, with total demand reaching 428.28 MU—the highest recorded so far this year. This figure has already exceeded last year’s peak demand of 425 MU logged in Aug, though it remains below the all-time high of 454.320 MU recorded on April 24, 2024.Meanwhile, peak power demand climbed to 20,146 MW on Friday, signalling the onset of a strong summer demand cycle across the state.
