Times News NetworkKanpur: A tigress rescued from Bijnor’s Amangarh Tiger Reserve died 40 km before Kanpur on Saturday while being brought to Kanpur Zoo.Sources said the tigress was locked in a cage on a rescue truck and sent for Kanpur Zoo, but after remaining confined in the cage for about 24 hours, she could not endure the long journey and died before reaching Kanpur Zoo.A three-member team of doctors conducted her postmortem, cremated the body, and the viscera has been sent to Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) Bareilly for examination.Zoo veterinarians said that during the postmortem, the tigress’s stomach was found completely empty. “This means she had not received food for about one week, and due to paralysis, she was unable to walk, because of which she could not hunt in the forest. Her teeth were completely worn down, from which her age was estimated to be about 14 years. Her kidneys had failed. Her lungs had shrunk,” they said.Meanwhile, at Kanpur Zoo, a female leopard that had been brought from Bijnor to Kanpur Zoo in 2019 and had injured herself by biting off her tail in April 2026, and whose treatment had been continuously carried out by the zoo’s veterinarians, died on Saturday.Zoo veterinarian Dr Nasir said that a team of three veterinary experts conducted her postmortem and her tissue samples have been sent to IVRI Bareilly to ascertain the actual cause of her death. “Her body was later cremated,” Dr Nasir added.
