Varanasi: A thief, who decamped with gold and silver ornaments worth several lakh rupees from a house in Govindpiur village on Mar 21 night, was arrested by Rohania police on Sunday.DCP Varuna Zone Pramod Kumar and ADCP Neetu Kadian said the team engaged to work out the Mar 21 theft case arrested the notorious burglar Shani Dharikar near Chaura Mata Mandir of Parmanandpur area. A country-made pistol and cartridges and cash worth Rs 8,500, police also recovered from him along with the car used in committing the crime. Gold and silver worth Rs 30 lakh he had stolen was recovered from a jewellery shop. Officials said a resident of Govindpur, went to Vindhyachal with his family to offer prayer on Mar 21. When they returned home on Mar 22, they found the lock of an almirah broken and valuables, including gold and silver jewellery and cash, stolen.During interrogation, Dharikar confessed he committed the theft along with two others, including his brother-in-law. On Mar 24, they sought help of a property dealer to sell the stolen jewellery for Rs 17 lakh in Mohania area of Bihar.Rohania police personnel visited the jeweller’s shop in Mohania to interrogate and examine the CCTV footage of the shop. The jeweller stated that his acquaintance had brought Dharikar to his shop and they claimed the jewellery was their own, and sold it. Police recovered the gold and silver from the shop.
