T’puram: The second phase expansion of Thiruvananthapuram International Airport has moved a step closer to reality with Thiruvananthapuram International Airport Ltd (TIAL) inviting tenders for the construction of a new integrated Terminal 2 (T2) and associated buildings worth Rs 2,700 crore as part of a comprehensive airport modernization programme.The tender marks the formal launch of one of the largest infrastructure projects undertaken at the airport since the operator, Adani Airport Holdings, took over its operations. Besides the new passenger terminal, the project includes development of a new aircraft apron, taxiways, landside infrastructure, utility buildings and cargo-related facilities aimed at significantly enhancing the airport’s passenger and cargo handling capacities.According to the tender document, construction is scheduled to commence in Nov 2027 and is expected to be completed by July 2030. The project has been planned to create world-class infrastructure capable of meeting the airport’s long-term traffic growth while ensuring uninterrupted flight operations during the construction period.The execution strategy places strong emphasis on safety and operational continuity. Since construction will take place within a functioning airport, the contractor will be required to maintain strict segregation of work zones, adopt foreign object debris (FOD) control measures and execute the project through carefully planned micro-phasing with daily handover of completed work areas to airport authorities, the tender document noted.The project will be executed in multiple stages beginning with mobilization, statutory clearances, surveys and utility identification, followed by civil works including excavation, foundations, reinforced concrete structures and superstructure construction. This will be followed by mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) installations, hydrant pipelines, fire protection systems, integrated testing and commissioning before the terminal is handed over for operations.The tender also envisages the deployment of heavy construction machinery including excavators, cranes, concrete pumps and telehandlers, supported by multidisciplinary teams of engineers, surveyors, quality assurance personnel, safety officers and skilled technicians. Dedicated logistics routes and time-controlled material deliveries have been proposed to minimize disruption to airport activities.A source close to the airport said the tender represents a significant milestone in the airport’s long-term expansion roadmap.“The new integrated terminal and supporting infrastructure have been designed keeping the airport’s future growth in mind. Passenger traffic has been increasing steadily, and the expansion will substantially improve terminal capacity, aircraft parking facilities and cargo operations while enhancing the overall travel experience,” the source said.The source added that one of the biggest challenges would be executing the project without affecting airport operations.“The construction strategy has been prepared in such a way that flights will continue with minimal disruption. Every phase has been planned in coordination with operational requirements, making safety and operational efficiency the highest priorities,” the source added.The execution plan also includes stringent quality control measures, inspection protocols, pressure testing, commissioning procedures, operational training and comprehensive handover documentation before the new facilities are commissioned. The last date for the bid submission is Aug 20, and the opening date is Aug 21.Once completed, the Phase II expansion is expected to transform Thiruvananthapuram International Airport into a future-ready aviation hub with significantly enhanced passenger and cargo handling capacity and world-class infrastructure capable of supporting the capital city’s growing domestic and international air traffic.
