Mohali: Panic has gripped morning walkers across Mohali district after a spate of stray dog attacks left at least 17 people injured in the past 48 hours. Cases were reported from Mohali city, Zirakpur, Kharar and Nayagaon, with most victims being walkers, joggers and two-wheeler riders.According to cases reported at local health facilities, five people were bitten in Mohali city, four on Zirakpur’s VIP Road, three each in Baltana and Kharar, and two in Nayagaon. Several victims required anti-rabies treatment after being attacked by packs of dogs.The incidents have once again brought the stray dog menace into sharp focus, with residents alleging that repeated complaints have failed to yield any lasting solution. Many senior citizens and fitness enthusiasts said they have altered their walking routes or stopped venturing out alone.Jeevanti, a resident of Baltana, said stray dogs roaming in packs have made it difficult for residents to step out safely. Kiran, a resident of Phase 5, Mohali, said dog attacks have become a daily concern, recalling a recent incident in which an 11-year-old boy was bitten while going to a nearby grocery shop.Residents have urged civic authorities to intensify sterilisation and vaccination drives and take immediate measures to curb attacks.Municipal corporation Mohali medical officer of health Dr Sanjeev Kamboj said around 250 stray dogs are sterilised every month at the Animal Birth Control Centre in Phase 1 Industrial Area, which covers areas falling under MC limits.
