Hyderabad: The Christian community across the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad came together to observe Good Friday, a day of mourning and reflection commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Thousands gathered at churches across the cities, participating in prayers, fasting, Passion Plays, and special services held throughout the day. Widely regarded as the most sacred Friday in the Christian calendar, the observances began early in the morning, with congregants assembling for a series of religious rituals.“Good Friday is a deeply spiritual day for us. The morning services include Bible readings, hymns, and the Stations of the Cross, which trace Christ’s journey from condemnation to burial,” said Sharon Dasari, member of a local church in Kukatpally. Following the morning prayers, many devotees returned home, only to reconvene at 3 pm, considered the hour of Jesus Christ’s death. “This is a sacred time for silent prayer and reflection. Believers pause to meditate on the sacrifice made by Christ,” added Sharon Preethi, who attends a church in Tarnaka.Several churches also staged the Passion Play, a dramatic reenactment of Christ’s trial and crucifixion, drawing large gatherings. In addition, the Way of the Cross was observed, with participants carrying wooden crosses to symbolically retrace Jesus’ final steps.Fasting formed an integral part of the observance, with many abstaining from food in solidarity with Christ’s suffering. “People observe fasts in different ways. Some skip one or two meals, while others fast until evening. It is a personal expression of faith and humility,” said Marie B, a resident who participated in the rituals in St Mary’s Church. The observance of Good Friday leads into Easter on Sunday, marking the resurrection of Christ and the culmination of the 40-day Lenten period. Lent is observed by many Christians as a time of repentance and self-discipline. Churches across the city are now preparing for Easter celebrations, with decorations, lights, and flowers adorning places of worship. Special services, hymns, and sermons will mark the occasion, as families come together to celebrate renewal and joy.
