Shillong: Law-and-order concerns in East Khasi Hills have led to the suspension of SIR hearings in 14 assembly constituencies.The district magistrate, who is also the election officer, ordered the cancellation of scheduled hearings of claims and objections under the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise until further orders.The cancellation does not apply to 26-Shella, 27-Pynursla and 28-Sohra constituencies, the office of Meghalaya’s chief electoral officer said on Tuesday.Affected electors have been advised to await fresh dates and stay in touch with their block-level officers, electoral registration officers or assistant electoral registration officers.“Every elector affected by the temporary suspension will be provided an opportunity to appear and furnish the required supporting documents when hearings are rescheduled,” an official statement said.Meghalaya CEO BDR Tiwari reviewed the SIR’s notice phase, hearings, claims and objections during an online meeting with election officials.Of 6,43,439 notices generated statewide, 4,78,217 have been delivered, and 1,65,222 are pending. Tiwari directed officials to expedite delivery and provide electors sufficient time to attend hearings and submit documents.So far, 62,343 hearings, or 9.69% of cases identified for notice and hearing, have been held. Since publication of the draft electoral roll, 5,848 claims and objections have been received.
