Thiruvananthapuram: Free access to a major portion of Shanghumugham Beach has been curtailed at the height of summer vacation season, leaving residents and tourists with little space at one of Thiruvananthapuram’s most visited coastal destinations. Barricades erected by the irrigation department have blocked entry to large stretches of the beach, where extensive excavation is under way to lay foundations for coastal protection and infrastructure upgrades. The beachfront has been dug up significantly, prompting officials to designate the area a high-risk zone. “The deep excavation makes this a dangerous area, particularly for children. The barricades are strictly a safety measure,” said an irrigation department official, adding that the contractor has been directed to fast-track completion before the monsoon arrives. The project is part of a broader effort to combat persistent coastal erosion at Shanghumugham, which has steadily reduced the usable beach area and damaged public facilities over the years. Once completed, the restored stretch will feature tiled walkways, improved seating areas and enhanced landscaping to elevate the visitor experience. However, regular visitors say the timing has caused considerable inconvenience. “We came here almost every evening during school holidays. Now there is no room for families to even sit or walk,” said Suresh Kumar T, a Pettah resident. Sreeja Chandran S of West Fort echoed the sentiment. “This beach is one of the city’s few accessible leisure spots for both locals and tourists. Blocking it during vacation season has affected many people who rely on this space to relax,” she said. Situated close to the international airport and known for its wide shoreline, Shanghumugham is a key recreational and tourism hub. The restrictions have caused a sharp drop in footfall during what is typically the beach’s busiest period.Officials said the inconvenience is temporary and necessary for long-term safety and sustainability.
