COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore district police on Friday seized Rs 16.3lakh unaccounted cash during a routine vehicle check at the Ettimadai check post.Personnel from the K G Chavadi police station, who were conducting vehicle checks on Friday evening, intercepted a car heading towards Kerala.During a search of the vehicle, police found cash to the tune of Rs 16.3 lakh. The driver was identified as A Riswan Basha, 40, a resident of Karnataka.Basha told police that he was going to Kerala with the cash to purchase a second-hand bus. However, he failed to produce valid receipts, bank withdrawal slips and other legal documents to substantiate the source or purpose of the funds.On the directions of Coimbatore district superintendent of police K Karthikeyan, the seized amount was handed over to the income tax department for further investigation.The SP said police had intensified surveillance at all border check posts to curb the illegal transport of cash and smuggled goods. He urged the public to carry valid documents for high-value transactions and to report suspicious activity to local authorities.
