Lucknow: A six-year-old child suffering from a rare congenital condition involving an abnormal connection between the airway and food pipe was treated successfully through robotic surgery at a city hospital. The child had recurrent chest infections and choking episodes during feeding. Doctors diagnosed the condition as broncho-oesophageal fistula (BEF), where the airway is abnormally connected to the oesophagus. Only 300 such cases have been reported so far worldwide. The surgery was led by paediatric surgeon Dr Sunil Kanoujia at Chandan Hospital. He said robotic surgery helped repair the defect with high precision, using smaller incisions and enabling faster recovery. Following the procedure, the child showed good recovery and has been relieved of symptoms, doctors said.
